This paper pinpoints how Brazil’s membership of the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) impacts its relations with the European Union (EU) and seeks to illustrate the potential and limitations of their respective foreign policies, particularly in relation to the Global South that the BRICS countries claim to represent. It employs a triangular analysis approach which acknowledges the importance of powerful actors shaping the context, but which enriches the understanding of the relations among less powerful players by incorporating intrinsic economic and identity factors. It argues that since its inception BRICS has impacted Brazil-EU relations by bolstering Brazilian economic aspirations and prompting changes in the government discourse. The paper is underpinned by a review and comparison of the relevant literature on the subject and an analysis of official documents and statements.
