Brazil in the age of globalisation: 20 years of Brazilian development
"Brazil has now taken off and is in flight, the only thing required is to confirm the route of the flight. On 21 May, and in collaboration with the Fundación Cultural Hispano-Brasileña, the conference “ Brazil in the age of globalisation: 20 years of Brazilian development"" was held in the Maragall Hall of the CIDOB Foundation. The event was attended by Mr. José Viegas, Brazil's Ambassador to Spain, and who presented the series of conferences of the Celso Furtado Chair of Studies on the Brazilian Economy, created in honour of the renowned Brazilian economist and social thinker."
"On 21 May, and in collaboration with the Fundación Cultural Hispano-Brasileña, the conference “ Brazil in the age of globalisation: 20 years of Brazilian development"" was held in the Maragall Hall of the CIDOB Foundation.
The event was attended by Mr. José Viegas, Brazil's Ambassador to Spain, and who presented the series of conferences of the Celso Furtado Chair of Studies on the Brazilian Economy, created in honour of the renowned Brazilian economist and social thinker.
The address was given by the Brazilian guest professor, Ricardo de Medeiros Carneiro, Professor of the Institute of Economy and the Director of the Study Centre on the Political and Economic Situation at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil. Carneiro presented a joint view of Brazil's economy over the past two decades, basing his description on aspects such as the evolution of the GDP, the production structure and the import tariff system for protecting Brazil's industry. In the professor’s opinion, the main factors determining the country's growth are: the limited spending on infrastructure, the low differentiation of production structure, the speculative nature of external savings and the fact that monetary stability has been achieved at the cost of macroeconomic stability. In spite of these aspects, he stressed Brazil's achievements in its health system, in the area of education (the country now has universities with international reputations) and the development of social policies to combat the extreme social inequalities, funded through taxation.
These represent important achievements in the context of Latin America. The Brazilian Ambassador agreed with the speaker’s summary, and stressed that Brazil is now in a positive phase in which production investment is required to generate stable economic growth."
