"What’s going on in the world?" Middle East: who shapes the new regional (dis)order?

Since the 7th October attack, the war in Gaza has unleashed a chain reaction across the Middle East, accelerating shifts that may be redrawing the regional order. In this new session of the "What’s going on in the world?" series of conferences, we will analyse the shifting dynamics and emerging power structures in the Middle East.

Since the 7th October attack, the war in Gaza has unleashed a chain reaction across the Middle East, accelerating shifts that may be redrawing the regional order. From Israel’s multi-front war to the fall of Bashar al-Assad and the rise of the Houthis, new balances of power are taking shape across the region.

Despite the regionalisation of the conflict, many of the forecasts made two years ago have not materialised. At the regional level, the normalisation of ties between Israel and several Arab states continues, even as Tel Aviv faces growing international isolation. The weakening of Hezbollah and the collapse of Assad’s regime have accelerated the decline of the so-called Axis of Resistance.

At the international level, the United States has deepened its military and diplomatic involvement, supporting Israel’s campaigns against Iran and the Houthis, and promoting a “peace plan” for Gaza. Russia, following Assad’s fall, is reassessing its role in the region. Meanwhile, the European Union remains on the sidelines, struggling to define a coherent position in an increasingly volatile landscape.

Is there a new regional order in the making? In which direction is this order heading? What role will regional actors such as Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Turkey play? And what about external actors? This debate will explore these questions.

In this session of the "What’s going on in the world?" series of conferences, Badr Al-Saif, Assistant Professor at Kuwait University, Fatima Moussaoui, Lecturer at Sciences Po Paris, and Intissar Fakir, Director and Senior Fellow of the North Africa and Sahel Program at the Middle East Institute, will analyse the shifting dynamics and emerging power structures in the Middle East. This session will be moderated by Moussa Bourekba, Research Fellow at CIDOB.

The session will be streamed live on CIDOB’s YouTube channel. The event will be conducted in English with simultaneous translation into Catalan.
