The Board of CIDOB Appoints Antoni Segura as the President of the Institution

Antoni Segura replaces Josep Joan Moreso, who had been in office as interim president since July 2016. The board has approved the appointment of seven new members in their individual capacity. With this enlargement, the number of board members has increased from 15 to 23. The aim is to include prominent members of Catalan academia and people affiliated with institutions conducting research at the European or international level.

On 12 January, the Board of CIDOB (Barcelona Centre for International Affairs) has met in an extraordinary session and named historian Antoni Segura as the new president of the institution. The Board has evaluated the career of Antoni Segura, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Barcelona and a specialist in conflict analysis. Segura replaces Josep Maria Moreso, who will remain associated with the institution as a member of the Board representing the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia.  

During his speech, Antoni Segura recalled his previous ties with CIDOB, an institution that he “has seen growing” and highlighting the “social transformation of knowledge”, an effort that the institution carries out in the international arena. Segura expressed his willingness to maintain and strengthen the areas of expertise at which CIDOB excels, particularly the Middle East and Latin America, while proposing to reinforce its other thematic axes: cities and regions, urban models and territorial organization; territorial tensions at the international level and parallel diplomacy.  

Following the extraordinary session of the Board held this morning at CIDOB’s main office, the appointment has taken effect with the assistance of the following members: Maria Badia, Secretary of Foreign Affairs and the European Union of Generalitat de Catalunya; David Listar, Director of Global Justice and International Cooperation of the Barcelona City Council; Josep Alay, Commissioner of International Relations of the Municipality of Barcelona; Oriol Illa, Director of International Area and Cooperation of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona; Ricardo López Aranda, Director of the Analysis and Forecasting Office of the Ministry of Foreign  Affairs and Cooperation; Josep Joan Moreso, Representative of the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia; José Antich; Joaquim Boixareu; Sixte Cambra and Antoni Esteve.  

Expansion of the Board  

At the same meeting, seven new members have joined the institution: Roger Albinyana, Director of the Department of Euro-Mediterranean Policies from the European Institute of the Mediterranean; Dolors Folch, Sinologist and Professor Emeritus from Pompeu Fabra University; Carmen Moliné, partner of ML Abogados, Office of Lawyers and Economists of Barcelona and treasurer of the Catalan Council of the European Movement; Albert Roca, Professor of African History at the University of Barcelona; Felip Roca, Secretary General of METROPOLIS, global association of big cities; Marina Subirats, Emeritus lecturer of Sociology of Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona; and Lluís Torner, director of the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) and lecturer at the Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya.  

From January 12, the Board of CIDOB, highest administrative body of the Foundation, is composed of the following:  

  • Institutions: Generalitat of Catalunya, Barcelona City Council, Barcelona Provincial Council, Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, Interuniversity Council of Catalonia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.  
  • Members in their individual capacity: Antoni Segura (President), Roger Albinyana, José Antich, Joaquim Boixareu, Sixte Cambra, Francesc Caminal, Antoni Esteve, Dolors Folch, Carles A. Curriculum of  Antoni Segura    

Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Barcelona (UB) and Director of the Centre for International Historical Studies at the University of Barcelona (UB) till September 2016. Specialized in conflict analysis, he has authored and edited numerous books and research articles: Más allá del islam (Alianza Editorial, Madrid, 2001); Aproximació al món islàmic. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed). He has been a member of the Advisory Board of Casa Árabe- International Institute of Arabic Studies and the Muslim World (2006-2012), and a member of the Governing Body of the Catalan International Institute for Peace (ICIP) (2008-2011). He is the Director of the journal Índice Histórico Español. He has been commissioned several exhibitions about the Republic, the Civil War in Catalonia and Spain, the Arab World and Islam. He has been a guest lecturer in various Spanish and international universities and institutions. He regularly appears on various media (press, radio and television).
