The book, Empresariado étnico en España [Ethnic Business Class in Spain], presents us with the work of different researchers who have tried to provide and answer to questions on why, where and how immigrants develop their businesses in receiving countries.
The thirteen articles that provide Empresariado étnico en España with unity and coherence are the result of the collaboration of fourteen social scientists in a seminar organised by the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and they cover aspects related to theory, geography, the perspective of gender and social mobility, as well as their influence on the social and cultural capital of the immigrants. With specific research on some Spanish cities (Almeria, Barcelona and Madrid), and on concrete national groups (the Chinese, the Senegalese, etc.), they endeavour to combine theoretical and methodological contributions with concrete studies of national groups and in perfectly delimited places.
This co-publication with the CIDOB Foundation for the publication of contrasted theoretical contributions and novel techniques in empirical approaches aims to answer the basic questions on business people of foreign origin, describing the internal mechanisms of a social fact visible in the centres of some Spanish cities, the precedents of which speak for themselves in the United States and the north of Europe and from a comparison of which lessons and conclusions are drawn.
