Based on a comparative study of 62 Latin American presidential election processes, this work presents a research project on the dual-round presidential election system, which has been used by the majority of Latin American countries over the past 20 years. A description of the different options which this system presents, accompanied by a reflection on the criticisms levelled at it by some experts, comprises an analysis which aims to serve as an indicator of the effects that this electoral formula has on the political system as a whole and within the political parties in particular.
