The Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence and the Jean Monnet Chair at the University of Miami, sponsored by the Cultural Corporation Programme of Spain's Ministry of Culture, organised the seminar “Spain in the European Union and the state of Latin American integration”, which was held at the University of Miami on 5 February. The event featured addresses and collaborations by Anna Ayuso, CIDOB; Albert Galinsoga Jordá, University of Lleida; María Lorca, University of Miami; Lorena Ruano, CIDE, Mexico; Carlos Hakansson, University of Piura; Roberto Domínguez, Suffolk University; Fernando Rueda-Junquera, University of Burgos; Eric Tremolada Álvarez, Universidad Externado of Colombia; Michel Leví Cora, Simón Bolívar University of Quito, and Antonio Martínez Puñal, University of Santiago de Compostela.

Within the framework of the commemoration of the 21st anniversary of Spain's entry into the European Community and Spain’s Presidency of the Council, the seminar attempted to analyse, from different standpoints, the EU's relations with Latin America and the Caribbean, Spain's role in this bi-regional space, the country's political-economic evolution within the EU and the current state of diverse mechanisms for Latin American integration. Anna Ayuso's address explored more deeply the role played by Spain in the bi-regional common space of EU-LAC, in addition to analysing the convergences between the LAC-EU summits and the Ibero-American summits, with the aim of identifying complementary elements that could serve to foster closer relations between the two regions. At an additional event, the researcher presented the book “A region under construction. UNASUR and integration in South America” (published by CIDOB and sponsored by Fundación Carolina), of which she is the author of one of the book's chapters, together with editors Manuel Cienfuegos, Pompeu Fabra University and José Antonio Sanahuja, Complutense University of Madrid.
