“What is going on in the world?” Towards an alternative visual narrative of migration

In this new edition of the series of conferences "What is going on in the world?", we will reflect on the capacity of photojournalism to transform the dominant narratives on migrations, and the importance of turning our gaze and capturing reality with a visual discourse that invites us to ask questions, to investigate beyond immediacy, to reflect critically, to change the discourse and to open the lens to everything that often remains out of focus.

Objective

By definition, photography represents an instant. Precisely because of this, it runs the risk of reducing a complex phenomenon to a single scene, hiding its chronological dimension, personal stories and structural dynamics. The BRIDGES project carried out an analysis of textual and visual narratives on migration in the media in different European countries, and concluded that photography often ends up reinforcing the stereotype of migrants, representing them either as a threat or as victims.
Beyond the traditional media, photojournalism also works to turn the gaze and capture reality with a visual discourse that invites us to ask questions, to investigate beyond immediacy, to reflect critically, to change the discourse and to open the lens to everything that often remains out of focus.

In this new edition of the series of conferences "What is going on in the world?", we will reflect on the capacity of photojournalism to transform the dominant narratives on migrations. We will do so with Anna Surinyach, photojournalist and graphic editor of 5W Magazine, and Edu Ponces, journalist and photographer at RUIDO Photo, moderated by BRIDGES project coordinator Blanca Garcés.

>> The session will be streamed live at CIDOB’s YouTube channel.

* This conversation is part of the European research project BRIDGES ("Assessing the production and impact of Migration narratives"). The starting point of the project is that media, social and political interpretations of the phenomenon of migration determine responses much more than facts themselves. From this point of view, BRIDGES analyses the causes and consequences of migration narratives in a context of increasing politicisation and polarisation.
