Objective

China has significantly increased its outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) in the last 15 years, emerging as one of the top global investors. Government policy has played a key role in China’s transformation as a top player in global investments and innovation. However, concerned by downward pressure on the yuan and risk of destabilization resulting from significant capital outflows registered in 2015 and 2016, Chinese authorities have shifted their OFDI support policy toward more scrutiny and tighter regulations. Will Chinese multinationals consolidate as global acquirers? This and other questions will be addressed by Lourdes Casanova in a new edition of CIDOB In conversation with,a platform for plural dialogue and reflection.

Lourdes Casanova is a senior lecturer and director of the Emerging Markets Institute at the Johnson School of Management at Cornell University. Named in 2017 by Esglobal as one of the most influential Iberoamerican women intellectuals, she is the author, along with Anne Miroux, of the second Emerging Market Multinationals Report, which covers the 20 biggest emerging markets by the size of their economies and how they have become the drivers of outbound capital flows.
