Objective

Since 9/11, governments have become especially concerned about radicalisation leading to violent extremism. In response to domestic and international security concerns, home-grown terrorism, countering violent extremism (CVE) and preventing violent extremism (PVE) have emerged as new strands of counterterrorism strategies. How do these paradigms differ? Why is it important to distinguish between both concepts? Which CVE and PVE strategies are appropriate under what conditions? How are they implemented by governmental and non-governmental actors to make societies more resilient against incitement and violence?

Debate between Christian Leuprecht, Class of 1965 Professor in Leadership in the Department of Political Science and Economics at the Royal Military College and Queen’s University, and Moussa Bourekba, Researcher at CIDOB, moderated by Blanca Garcés Mascareñas, Senior Research Fellow and Research Coordinator at CIDOB.
