LOCALITZACIÓ: Sala Clara Campoamor. Congreso de los Diputados
ORGANITZAT PER: CIDOB y Fundación Ortega-Marañón

Objectiu

Policies that regulate the acquisition or loss of nationality can greatly impact on immigrants considering to access citizenship. In the context of the European Union, each member state has a different procedure and legislation, which can encourage or hinder naturalisations.

This conference will look at the case of Spain which is quickly becoming one of the main European countries of naturalisations, with over 465.000 new European Citizens in the past three years by presenting the results from the research project “ Differentiation in the Naturalisation of Immigrants in Spain ” (DNIs).

This will be followed by a discussion on how to remove the obstacles to citizenship and to promote naturalisation in the European Union. In part this will include the presentation of the “ Immigrant Citizenship Campaigns ”.

Lastly, the possible role that the EU can play in this debate will be analysed, focusing on the impact that European Citizenship has had in the remodelling of the Member States’ competences in terms of acquisition and loss of nationality.
