Europe - [11/19/2009]
The report "A project for Europe. Reflections and proposals for Spain's Presidency of the Council of the European Union" has been presented in Barcelona and Madrid.
To coincide with the upcoming election of the President of the European Council and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, CIDOB and the Círculo de Economía have presented a collection of reflections and proposals for Spain’s EU Presidency in the first half of 2010.
Given the challenge that heading the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (during the six-monthly period commencing on 1 January 2010) represents for Spain, the Círculo de Economía and CIDOB, two Barcelona institutions dedicated to deliberation and debate, have drawn up a document of reflections and proposals.
The view of the EU that the document sets out – a strong, open union that is capable of providing solutions and defending the rights of its citizens in times of crisis, and at the same time involving itself in the resolution of the great global challenges – has been created for use as a possible source of inspiration for the Spanish government’s actions during the first six months of 2010, as well as going beyond that and helping to formulate a strategy for Spain in Europe in the years to come.
Thus, the need for a strong president, reviewing Spain's priorities in Europe and the role that the country wants to play, making a decisive contribution to the relaunching of Europe, proposing a project for revitalising European integration, making progress on the common defence policy and greater involvement in Eastern Europe are just some of the proposals included in the report that have received the support of the Secretariat for the European Union of the Generalitat of Catalonia.
The presentation of the report was attended by Salvador Alemany, Josep Piqué, who represented the Círculo de Economía and CIDOB in Barcelona and Madrid respectively, and Jordi Vaquer, Director of CIDOB.
