Documentos CIDOB Migraciones; 17
In recent years, irregular immigration has become one of the main political concerns, at both national level and on the level of the European Union. In the countries of the EU, politicians have identified irregular migration as a “problem”, and have given priority to the prevention of the phenomenon in national migration policies and in the development of a common immigration policy.
The growing pressure of irregular migration flows in the Canary Islands, Lampedusa, Malta and the Eastern Greek Islands has underlined the concerns of EU Member Countries with respect to the protection of their external borders (and those of the European Union). The main aim of this edition of CIDOB Documents, Migrations is to examine how migration flows have been managed along the southern maritime limits of the European Union, and how the debates over human rights and security have been developed out in these scenarios.
