This work highlights the transformation that has occurred in recent years in immigrant settlement and integration policies in Australia, one of the traditional countries of immigration. Through a review of the three main periods of immigration after World War II, the text outlines the differences between the promotion of immigration and the assimilationist policy of the period from 1946 to 1975; the promotion of multiculturalism in the period from 1976 to 1995; and the changes that have taken place since the conservatives came to power in 1995. From that year onward, the admittance policies have gradually been diluted, with the government opting for a model that prioritises the entry of highly qualified immigrants who do not require many instruments of reception and assistance for their accommodation.
