Documentos CIDOB Europa; 1
Fifteen years after the reunification of Germany, the author of this essay takes this milestone in time as a point of departure for describing and analysing – since the historic events of 1989/1990 -- the political, economic and social situation of the prime European economy and the most populated member state of the European Union. In the study, he examines the impact of this reunification, focusing attention on three different issues: first of all, the possible relationship between the way in which the economic and monetary unification of the two Germanies was carried out and the economic stagnation the country has suffered during the last few years (low growth rates, historically high unemployment rates, apathy in domestic consumption); secondly, the change in the orientation of Germany’s foreign and security policy; and, finally, Germany’s influence on the future of the process of European integration.
