Power and regimes in the contemporary Arab world

Authoritarian Arab regimes and their elites have developed a great capacity for survival and stability which contradicts the image that we have of the region as one that is undergoing constant upheaval. In view of this, the book employs an analysis that situates each dynamic in its context, and which enables us to understand these societies that are so geographically close to us, but which at the same time generate so many preconceived ideas and erroneous interpretations in the West.

The aim of this work is to study the power relations that define the political regimes in today's Arab world, and to propose a universal approach and methodology capable of going beyond the prejudices. To understand the social, political, ideological and economic dynamics of these societies, as with any other society, we need to analyse the causes of their stagnation, in addition to the forces attempting to transform them. This book begins by presenting a theoretical and methodological approach that offers us a general view of the power and political regimes in today's Arab world. The subsequent chapters analyse the situation in nine Arab countries with very different political, economic and social systems, as well as offering a detailed, comparative view of the dynamics of power relations in the Arab worl.
