A description of the current situation of agriculture in the Mediterranean countries, with the analysis of some elements that are key to the state of rural development (which include the dominant agricultural model), with their successes, deficiencies and alternatives. The impact of the globalisation of markets and the fact that the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) – which is fundamental for understanding agricultural development in the European sphere – has guaranteed the increase in agricultural productivity beyond European food self-sufficiency, has caused negative collateral effects, of both a social and environmental nature, in a space, the Mediterranean, co-inhabited by two worlds which are quite economically and socially separated (the European Union and the Mediterranean countries to the south and east). The successive reforms of this policy in the last few years, attending to the multifunctional nature of agricultural activity, have incorporated new challenges and objectives, such as, among others, the preservation of cultural and natural heritage.
