Since January 2002, the city of Barcelona has been promoting an annual series of international seminars, organised by the CIDOB Foundation, to reflect on the topic, “War and Peace in the 21st Century.” The objective is to understand the underlying causes and dynamics of the current international scene and to analyse, as part of this discussion, the world system in a long-term perspective.
This book is the result of the impassioned debates that were generated around such issues as “Transatlantic Relations” (January 2003) and the construction of a “Diverse Europe for Global Security” (January 2004). Eminent experts, scholars and politicians, both Spanish and from other countries, examine the main questions dominating the agenda of European construction (What does it mean to be European?, How must difference be managed and how must integration and diversity be harmonised?) and also those regarding Europe’s role in the world (Can Europe make a specific contribution to global security and governance?, Do the tensions with the U.S. cover over a difference in structural perspective?).
With contributions by Giulano Amato (Vice President of the European Convention. Former Prime Minister of Italy), Manuel Castells (Research Lecturer, Open University of Catalonia and Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of California, Berkeley), Joan Clos (Mayor of Barcelona), Jürgen Habermas (Philosopher, Johann Wolfang Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt), David Held (Lecturer in Political Science, London School of Economics), G. John Ikenberry (Lecturer in Political Science and International Affairs, Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University), Robert Kagan (Senior Associate, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Washington, D.C.), Riva Kastoryano (Researcher, CNRS – CERI), Kenton W. Keith (Senior Vice President, Meridian International Center), Tariq Modood (Lecturer in Sociology, Politics and Public Policy and Director of the Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship, University of Bristol, United Kingdom), Michel Rocard (European Parliament Minister. Former Prime Minister of France), Narcís Serra (President of the CIDOB Foundation) and Javier Solana (High Representative for the CFSP, European Commission).
