Núm. 18. "¿Debería españa parecerse a Francia?" La desventaja educativa de sus inmigrantes y el impacto de su concentración en algunas escuelas

Documentos CIDOB Migraciones; 18

The educational disadvantage suffered by students of immigrant origin cannot be put down to their status as migrants, but essentially to their social class, owing to the high proportion of immigrants in the lowest classes of society. This is the main conclusion drawn by the author in his analysis of the French experience – a country that has promoted universalist policies aimed at democratising access to education for all citizens and avoiding particularist interventions aimed at specific sectors of the population. Despite the criticism the French education system has received – and especially following the protests in the banlieus in 2005 – the system has achieved significant levels of equality between immigrant and autochthonous students. In the French case, therefore, the “immigrant” factor has disappeared when it comes to determining levels of educational disadvantage; however, this factor does exist (in addition to class inequality) in the case of Spain.
