Sub-contracting has often shared an unfortunate notoriety with the phenomenon of delocalisation and other manifestations of globalisation. Although currently in Catalonia there are some 9700 companies acting as sub-contractors (providing jobs for some 182,000 people), more often than not this issue is discussed in order to issue alerts over the loss of jobs that the sub-contracting of industry and services on an international scale can cause. Nevertheless, there are opportunities available for the Spanish economy: if the possibility of making big investments in Asia is, for the most part, reserved for large corporations, sub-contracting is a method that promotes the internationalisation of small and mid-sized firms. In this book, which is both theoretical and practical, the authors analyse this phenomenon from a three-way economic, social and business perspective, opening up this topic of utmost importance which has been studied very little in Spain. It includes, in addition, the study of three real cases on the part of Spanish companies in one of the countries that is currently benefiting the most from this practice: China, one of the markets that sparks the greatest interest in Spain and throughout the world.

Jacinto Soler has a Ph.D. in Economics and is the Director of the consulting firm, Hispachina, in Spain. Olga Grau is an economics journalist.
