The aim of this document is to analyse - using a comparative perspective - the impact of the liberalisation of agricultural trade on the economy of two countries with similar proportions of rural population - Brazil and China. The research project carried out by Graziella Cristiano which is presented in this document is based, firstly, on the development strategies adopted in each country before opening up to foreign trade, and secondly, on the way in which agricultural trade liberalisation took place in each case, examining the impact on rural poverty and bearing in mind the fact that in both cases, this sector plays a fundamental role in economic growth and development. By way of conclusion, the researcher examines the importance of the role of the State in containing the negative effects that agricultural liberalisation has on the rural economy.
