The attempts at institutionalising a security model in Latin America are contemporary to those in Europe. Furthermore, they also received a boost from North America. However, 60 years after these events, in terms of security and defence, the western hemisphere is still beset by shortages and incoherences. And furthermore, new challenges to tackle are emerging within this situation. In this article, the author presents a few key points to help the reader to understand the current situation, both from an institutional point of view and from the mistrust generated by the balance of military powers in the area.
