Migrations Programme - [11/24/2007]
Speaking in Brussels, Gemma Pinyol, Coordinator of the CIDOB Foundation's Migrations Programme, stressed the need to establish common conceptual frameworks to discuss integration or accommodation of the immigrant population. Pinyol was speaking at the 4th CHALLENGE Training School, where she was participating as a commentator in a session dedicated to local and national experiences. The Migrations Coordinator also pointed out that a consideration of sub-state administrations would represent a useful opportunity to discuss public philosophies of integration in the different countries of the European Union.
The seminar, titled Integration, immigration and citizenship: European, national and local responses, was held at the headquarters of the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels. It was attended by some 20 doctorate students from different European universities, who presented part of their ongoing research projects. Also present were representatives from European institutions and the academic experts Didier Bigo, Elspeth Guiad, Dora Kostakopoulou and Marco Martiniello.
CHALLENGE is a project run by the Directorate General for Research of the European Commission which is aimed at providing a more comprehensive assessment of the rules and practices of security, while examining their implications for civil liberties, human rights and social cohesion in the European Union.
