Mediterranean Programme - [02/02/2007]

"Researching the Mediterranean" is presented in Brussels

Published by the CIDOB Foundation, the British Council and the European Institute of the Mediterranean, this study on the Mediterranean and Arab world in the United Kingdom and Spain was presented in Brussels to achieve greater interaction with the diplomatic corps of the Mediterranean countries stationed in the Belgian capital and with the people employed in the European Commission and the Council.

During the presentation of Researching the Mediterranean, proposals emerged for continuing the initiative of Hispano-British co-operation in the sphere of Mediterranean studies, such as the possibility of organising doctoral seminars, creating a database on research on Mediterranean issues, organising new encounters and seminars, etc., all of this with the objective of achieving greater connection among scholars from different countries or disciplines and with different levels of training.

One of the people who intervened in the act was Eduard Soler, co-ordinator of the Mediterranean Programme of the CIDOB Foundation. Also participating were Stephan Roman, Regional Director of the British Council in Western Europe and North America; the editors of the study, Iván Martín, from Casa Árabe and the Instituto Internacional de Estudios Árabes y del Mundo Musulmán (Madrid) and Richard Gillespie, Lecturer in Political Science atthe University of Liverpool; Senén Florensa, Director of the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMED); and Andrés Bassols, of the Foreign Relations Directorate-General of the European Commission.

Among those attending the presentation of this study, which had already been presented in Barcelona and Madrid, members of the academic community of Belgium and of different non-governmental and educational organisations stood out.
