Migrations - [09/18/2009]
CIDOB has participated in the 14th International Metropolis Conference, held in Copenhagen on 14-18 October. CIDOB organised two debate workshops of the over 50 that took place during the international event.
Participants in the workshop Facing the crisis: migrations at the crossroads? included Joaquín Arango (Professor of Sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid and co-organiser of the workshop), Laura Zanfrini (Catholic University of Milan and the ISMU Foundation) and Justina Frelak (Institute of Public Affairs, Warsaw). During the course of their addresses, the speakers analysed the approaches being implemented by different countries in order to manage migration flows for work purposes, in addition to examining the instruments being applied to assess the effectiveness and coherences of said approaches.
In the workshop 'Door-knocking': Migration and border management in the Southern and Eastern borders, organised by Ruth Ferrero (Complutense University of Madrid) and Gemma Pinyol (CIDOB), the speakers analysed the policies and instruments implemented by different EU countries in the area of border management. The case of the southern border was discussed by Ana M. López Sala (CSIC), while Justyna Frelak (Institute of Public Affairs, Warsaw) analysed the eastern border, and Elena Nikiforova (FAFO, Oslo) examined the northern border.
The 14th International Metropolis Conference brought together more than 900 experts in the fields of immigration, integration and migration policies from different countries, under the title "Migration and Mobility. National responses to cultural diversity".
