Num. 7. Perspectivas y retos del asilo y el refugio en Europa

Documentos CIDOB Migraciones; 7

The need to harmonise the directives of the asylum policies and those of the immigration policies of the different countries in the European Union are the principal arguments focused on in the intervention of the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee in Spain. Fifty-five years after the Geneva Convention, the new motives that have been added to the traditional causes of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership to a given social group, or political opinions, along with other factors like the progressive reduction in the percentage of recognition of appeals for asylum, the confusing of these applicants with other human movements, like migratory flows, have ended up affecting the protection of the right to asylum in European countries.

Carlos Boggio is the Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Spain.
