Documentos CIDOB Asia; 6
Noting the limited presence of Spanish business in one of the most economically dynamic areas of the planet, this economist ponders the question of what elements hinder the internationalisation of Spanish business in the Asian environment, using as his point of departure the study of three examples in the food sector that carry out their activity primarily in the People’s Republic of China and that are representative of direct Spanish investment on this continent. This approach to the analysis of the Spanish business presence in Asia allows one to come to know, up close, about the problems and challenges faced by several businesses which, without having at their disposal high-technology products or novelties on a worldwide scale, decided to invest years ago in one of the most complex markets in the world, but also one with the greatest worldwide projection. In the future, they will have to consolidate their leadership and face the costs generated by the spread of their sales and product-promotion networks, the pressure of multinational firms, and the progressive establishment of powerful chains of supermarkets and malls. Some companies will also invest in other, more or less nearby, Asian markets, multiplying the challenges for them to meet.
