In the 1980s, interest in climate change was largely limited to scientists, while today it has become an important issue on the international political agenda, progressively becoming incorporated into the governmental arena. In a context marked by the Kyoto Protocol, the most well-known international environmental protection treaty, which, for the first time, establishes quantitative commitments regarding limitations on greenhouse gas emissions, the pages of this journal show the roadmap that must be followed in the framework of this multilateral agreement for the period 2008-2012. Focusing on the challenges posed and the main mechanisms for confronting climate change, these articles look beyond 2012 and also review the role that the European Union plays in this and the adaptation of Spain and Catalonia to the commitments reached.
