The document examines, firstly, the reasons behind the US invasion of Iraq and the main mistakes made by the US government in its planning, and which subsequently gave rise to major political and security vacuums. Secondly, Hiltermann analyses the results of the latest strategy aimed at filling the security vacuum - the "Surge" - which consists of sending large numbers of extra troops to bring an end to the violence. Finally, the author describes the three possible future scenarios - a failed state with military intervention from neighbouring countries, a state in chaos with the continued presence of US troops and the partition of the country - and the risks involved in each of these scenarios.
