Num. 3. La Interculturalidad en el campo de la comunicación en Cataluña. Estado de la opinión

Documentos CIDOB Dinámicas Interculturales; 3

To offer a general overview of the current situation of interculturality in the field of communications in Catalonia is the objective of this report, which forms part of the 2003 – 2005 Interculturality programme, concretely, in the context of the work on Intercultural Dynamics: Recognition and Coexistence. In order to arrive at a state of the question and of opinion on this issue, the authors have designed a research project focusing on three spheres, through interviews with 22 professionals in the academic sector (the most representative universities), the socio-political sphere (public administrations, foundations and NGOs) and professional areas (professional groups and the media). A general comparative review of the different contributions brings out, principally, coincidences in the difficulty of specifying the delimitation of the field of communication with respect to interculturality, as well as the small degree of conceptual clarification with regard to this phenomenon. In this sense, the authors conclude that the obstacles which emerge range from ethnocentrism to lack of interest, and they point out the need to redefine the country itself so that it can be a receiving society and not just an admitting society.
Miquel Rodrigo, Professor of Communication Theory, Autonomous University of Barcelona; Janet Estrada, journalist and researcher specialising in immigration and the media; and Anna Estrada, technical consultant in the Research, Studies and Publications Service of the Audiovisual Council of Catalonia.
