The purpose of this work is to present a historical assessment of the political relations between Spain and Cuba over the past three decades, concretely since the beginning of Spain’s democratic transition. The choice of this period stems from the interest awakened by a stage in Spanish history in which for the first time the possibility of designing a more active foreign policy and putting it into practice is manifested, with a greater margin of autonomy and from the perspective of a democratic country. In regard to the object of study, the idea is to carry out a temporal analysis in order to establish some differentiated periods of a political relationship that has very marked characteristics for the two countries, due both to historical antecedents and to the evolution of the political situation of each country in recent decades. By way of conclusion, the author indicates that, despite certain moments of decreased tensions, discrepancies of a structural nature between the two governments, mainly over their political and economic models, impede a mature relationship with greater projection toward the future.
