Mediterranean Programme - [09/26/2008]

The INEX Project begins its activity

17 September saw the launch meeting for the INEX Project, an initiative financed by the European Commission’s 7th framework programme; the CIDOB Foundation's Mediterranean Programme will be participating in the Commission's consortium for a period of three years.

This project, headed by the Peace Research Institute of Oslo and with the participation of 10 research centres, has been devised with the aim of providing greater information and political recommendations on how to progress, in a parallel manner, in the field of security while respecting legality and ethical principles. The project analyses a series of issues, such as the consequences of the proliferation of new technologies, the legal dilemmas brought about by international agreements and the implications of changing actors in the field of security at a time when the border between internal and external is becoming increasingly blurred.

Within the framework of this project, the CIDOB Foundation will be analysing the application of the main dilemmas in the areas of ethics, legality and security in European policies toward the Mediterranean, paying particular attention to the cases of Morocco, Algeria and Egypt. During the course of the next three years, analytical documents will be published and seminars will be held in order to promote wider knowledge of these cases.

Eduard Soler, Coordinator of the Mediterranean Programme, together with Pinar Bilgin, Professor at the University of Bilkent, will be presenting the objectives of the working group that will be focusing on the Mediterranean basin. Soler and Bilgin have already presented to the other researchers a working plan that will not only analyse EU policies, but also those of different Member States, while its main thread will be the dilemma between the promotion of values and the interests that are at stake with respect to security.
