Casa Asia, the CIDOB Foundation and the Royal Elcano Institute are publishing the fourth edition of the Asia-Pacific Yearbook, a volume that is a reference point in the field of studies on Asia in Spanish, and which has been devised in order to summarise for the reader the main events that took place in the region in 2007. The chronicle of events is accompanied by articles and commentaries on their present and future implications, which offer keys to interpreting a huge geographical area that is currently immersed in a major transformation, not only owing to its enormous dynamism, but also because of the fact that it affects a number of people that is unprecedented in the history of mankind.

The issues covered in this new edition of the Yearbook include issues of politics and security, including the current stagnation of Japanese politics and the different survival scenarios for the Chinese Communist Party to maintain power. Other issues analysed include the nuclear crisis with North Korea and the intensification of violent conflict in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Yearbook also includes specific studies on the region's main economies, annotated with reflections on Asia's new interest in Africa, and the dilemma over the issue of Central Asia's energy. Also dealt with are issues of a more cultural and social nature, such as the transformation of the Chinese family, the widening of the generation gap in Japan and the management of problems relating to the consumption of illegal drugs in societies such as those in Asia, which are extremely heterogeneous.

Furthermore, as has been the tradition since the first edition, the Yearbook will pay particular attention to the growing relations between Spain, Europe and Latin America with Asia and the Pacific, by means of specific articles accompanied by chronological timelines, maps and the most recent statistical indicators, all of which help to turn this publication into a platform for reflection and a tool for subsequent studies on the region.
