Núm. 25. Los gobiernos de coalición en los sistemas presidenciales de Latinoamérica: elementos para su estudio.

Documentos América Latina; 25

This study attempts to examine elements that can be of great help when analysing the coalitional dynamics that exist in Latin American presidential systems. Starting with the theoretical difficulties that derive from the application of the concept to these political systems, the discussion is based on determining, on one hand, the validity of the traditional analytical frameworks, and on the other, on examining what structural characteristics of Latin America’s presidential systems could facilitate the incorporation of different coalitional dynamics into the activity of government. Though the different configurations of head of state and legislation in Latin American presidential systems represent a serious handicap for establishing and visualising coalition governments, the study will attempt to offer a few key points to help readers in their study and understanding of the subject.
