This volume brings together the speeches presented at the seminar A new economic development agenda for Latin America, organised by the CIDOB Foundation and held in Salamanca in October 2005. This event, which was attended by leading Latin American economists and politicians, also featured the participation of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL). The main objective of the seminar was to compare different viewpoints through a rigorous, detailed analysis of the components of the economic and social policies currently applied in Latin America; the participants also offered suggestions on how to promote a more vigorous, sustained economic growth capable of helping to overcome two grave problems which represent the most pressing challenges for regional development: poverty and inequality.
This joint edition sprang from a desire by both institutions to bring this important material for reflection to a wider audience, and it reflects their interest in promoting ─ on both sides of the Atlantic ─ a fertile exchange of views and a search for the complementariness of these views, all of which are essential elements for joining forces to promote development.
