Regarding immigration issues, it is increasingly recognised that their study should not focus only on attending to the conflicts generated by the mobility of immigrants and their permanent residence in neighbourhoods and cities, but rather attention should also be paid to the interpretations of the conflict. For this reason, the publication of this book aims to be a first step in the analysis of discourses on immigration through three fields: the media, parliaments and administrations. The present volume, which aims to contribute to the academic debate on this subject in Spain, brings together the best contributions from a seminar held at Pompeu Fabra University with the collaboration of the Migrations Programme of the CIDOB Foundation and the Research Group on Immigration and Political Innovation (GRIIP) of the Department of Political and Social Sciences.
Ricard Zapata-Barrero is a Permanent Lecturer in Political Science at Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona) and the Director of the Research Group on Immigration and Political Innovation (GRIIP). His recent works include, among other titles, Filosofías de la inmigración en naciones minoritarias: Flandes, el Québec, y Cataluña en perspectiva [Immigration Philosophies in Minority Nations: Flanders, Quebec and Catalonia] (2007), Immigració i autogovern [Immigration and Self-Government] (2007) and Multiculturalism, Muslims and Citizenship: A European Approach (edited with T. Modood and A. Triandafyllidou) (2006).
Teun A. van Dijk is a linguist. He was a Professor of Discourse Studies at the University of Amsterdam until 2004, and he is currently a Visiting Professor at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. His current projects focus on discourse, knowledge and context. Among his publications, which include over 30 books and 200 articles, are: Context. A Multidisciplinary Theory (in preparation), Communicating Ideologies (with Martin Pütz and JoAnne Neff-van Aertselaer, eds. (2004) and Racism at the Top (with Ruth Wodak, eds. (2000).
