The contributions compiled here examine the paths of transition followed by different countries in the Euro-Mediterranean arc in a comparative way. Some approaches focus their analyses on the dichotomy between “shock therapy” and gradualism; other authors basically attend to the different ways of understanding institutional continuity and the need to build markets, instead of expecting them to emerge through a drastic reduction in the role of the State. On the whole, this book aims to abound in the complexity of the transformations that generically designate the concepts of development and transition, terms often used and often misunderstood.
