In this study, Nilüfer Gole takes a look at the bidirectional influences of the way in which Islam is publicly addressed on the transformation of Europe and Turkey. Gole explores how the public debate in Europe and its classic cleavages are being reshaped in the face of the growing importance of Islam as well as in view of issues that are emerging as being of key importance to people’s very identity. In a reciprocal manner, these transformations and public treatment of issues which, to some extent, represent a situation of déjà vu for Turkey, also affect the way in which Turkish intellectuals view Europe, a region that has until now represented a reference point for achieving a process of increasing democratisation. Against this background, the article debates points such as the veil, Turkey's integration into the EU and the controversy unleashed by the Danish cartoons of Muhammad.
