Migrations Programme - [06/18/2007]

The role of actors in the management of immigration and integration

The Jordi Maragall Hall was the location for the second GRIIP-CIDOB seminar, which on this occasion focused on the role of different actors in the management of the immigration processes in Spain and Europe. This seminar, the first of which was held on 17 March 2006, was the result of a joint initiative between the Migrations Programme of the CIDOB Foundation and the Research Group on Immigration and Political Innovation (GRIIP) at PompeuFabraUniversity.

The seminar Actors and networks of actors: the managers of the immigration process between Spain and Europe focused on different types of political and social actors. However, the debate on political actors was based on certain practical cases, such as the role of the European Union and state governments in relation with migration flows, and the role of local and autonomous governments in the management of integration.

During the different addresses, immigrants’ organisations, social networks and the media were described as being the main social actors. Meanwhile, the case studies presented were based on the involvement of different actors in the management of integration and coexistence in Milan, Brescia and Barcelona.

The seminar's participants came from different universities in Spain and Europe. And even though most of the studies presented focused on the actors participating in the management of the migration process in Spain, other speakers made reference to Bulgaria, Italy and the Netherlands.

Ricard Zapata and Gemma Pinyol, the directors of the GRIIP-CIDOB seminar, closed the event by announcing the title of the 2008 seminar: Comparative Studies on Immigration in Spain and Europe.
