Development and Co-operation Programme - [02/28/2008]

The process of organising spanish cooperation moves towards multilateralism

On 19 February, Enric Royo, Coordinator of the CIDOB Foundation's Development Programme, took part in the workshop organised by the Office of Development Planning and Policy Evaluation (DGPOLDE) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation to discuss the latest draft for a multilateral cooperation strategy. The events, held in the Quinto Centenario Hall at the AECID headquarters, brought together around 50 representatives from different research centres, public administrations, Spanish civil servants in multilateral organisations and representatives from civil society.

Spain's strategy for multilateral cooperation represents a significant step forward in the process of organising cooperation policy, since it means that for the first time, efforts will be orientated at achieving a multilateralism that is active, selective and strategic, and which covers no less than 40% of the total volume of Spain's AOD. The document includes a series of objectives, lines of strategy and criteria for the selection of multilateral partners, and includes cooperation with some 20 organisations from the United Nations system, Multilateral Development Banks and the International Monetary Fund, the European Union, Global Funds and innovative funding systems, regional organisations, SEGIB, as well as collaboration with multilateral coordination mechanisms such as the CAD of the OECD.
