Mediterranean Programme - [01/23/2007]

Libya’s rapprochement to the West, according to Joaquín Pérez Villanueva

Joaquín Pérez Villanueva, the Spanish Ambassador to Libya, explained the reasons why this Mediterranean country has reconciled with the West and, especially, with the United States, in a lecture organised by the Mediterranean Programme of the CIDOB Foundation and the Barcelona Institute of International Studies (IBEI) .

Pérez Villanueva dealt with the historical and political evolution of Libya, especially during the Gaddafi government, in a lecture held at the IBEI Foundation and entitled Libya and change.

The Ambassador to Tripoli, who revealed little-known aspects of the Libyan political system, highlighted the “birth of an incipient commerce” in this African country, submerged, nevertheless, in “an absolute dependence on the energy sector”.

This activity, which forms part of the Aula Internacional Programme of the Diplomacy School, in collaboration with the Centre of International Studies of Barcelona, aims to contribute to the dissemination of information on Spanish foreign policy in the national and international spheres. Within the framework of this programme, the CIDOB Foundation and the IBEI Foundation organise public lectures in which different Spanish Ambassadors participate.
