This course is designed as an elective module in the Master’s programmes in Development Studies and International Studies. These classes will be taught by specialists in sub-Saharan societies and will have as a fundamental goal that of giving a critical view of the most characteristic African traits and the most important problems of black Africa in the past few years. All of the instructors have been selected due to their recognised specialisation and to their ability to go outside of the most frequent hypotheses in the media.
During this module, the dynamic structures and the perspectives that are present in Africa, such as history, economics, anthropology, politics and currents of thought, will be dealt with and given priority. The module will be supported with audio-visual materials (the projection of which will be done outside of the syllabus), the newspaper and periodicals library and the general library. The dossier of work will be short and focused: the readings will be individualised and not general, since the objective is a personalised reflection in accordance with the interests and scientific curiosity of each participant. The detailed syllabus of the course, with partial bibliographies for each topic, will be essential for following the course and deciding on subjects to work on. The system of evaluation will be based on class attendance, the readings and the presentation of a paper agreed upon with the instructors of this module. In no case will it be possible to do papers of a general nature that do not deal with Africa in its specificities in the global context.
