Education
8-9 October 2009
The Consorci Universitat Internacional Menéndez Pelayo of Barcelona (CUIMPB - Centre Ernest Lluch) invites you to participate in the course "The State and social cohesion in Latin America: a view in light of the crisis", organised by CUIMPB - Centre Ernest Lluch in collaboration with CIDOB and Casa América, and directed by José Luis Machinea.
The expansive economic cycle that Latin America experienced between 2004 and 2008 enabled the continent to reduce unemployment and poverty rates, though this has not proved sufficient to resolve the continent's more pressing problems, in its efforts to build real "social cohesion". The region continues to be one of the most unequal in the world, with high levels of poverty and the absence of an adequate system of social protection, and this situation has been exacerbated by the current economic crisis.
During this course, we will be adopting different points of view to evaluate some of the key points to understanding the State of social cohesion in Latin America, with particular emphasis on the effects of the crisis on the regional level. To this end, we will be discussing the impact of the new international context (over the short and medium-term) on variables and policies that will be of key importance for social cohesion, such as sustainable growth, employment, the defence of competition, social policy and institutions. On several opportunities, reference will be made to the European model, whether it be to highlight the differences or to assess to what extent some of its characteristics are applicable to Latin America. We will also be analysing what can be expected in terms of cooperation in light of the crisis in the developed world. One of the characteristics of the course will be its attempts to transform diagnosis into an assessment of the alternatives in terms of public policy.
