Education
28-29 October 2009
Directed by: Albert Roca, Lecturer in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Lleida.
For the second consecutive year, the Centre for International Studies in Barcelona (CIDOB) is sponsoring a course on the subject of Africa, organised by the CUIMPB - Centre Ernest Lluch. This year, our aim is to highlight and understand some of African societies’ basic response mechanisms to crisis situations, placing emphasis on people and endogenous factors (such as tradition and history) and leaving aside the theories of experts in international organisations.
Africans have adapted to living with structural problems and persistent insecurity by generating everyday solutions where international aid has failed. Given the uncertainty produced by the current crisis, which is paralyzing social and economic progress, sub-Saharan Africa represents a unique context in which to review the diversity of links between security, trust and development, as well as representing an opportunity to learn.
