Central Asia is probably the region in the world where Islam has historically manifested itself in its most moderate, liberal form. The Islamic traditions present in the region, such as Hanafism, Sufism and Jadidism, have had a great influence in the creation of national identities since the 7th century. Meanwhile, the secularisation of society that was imposed during the Soviet era has been accompanied, until the present day, by the separation of the State and religion. This workshop will offer an analysis of the role of Islam in the region, its influence on the structuring of civil society and the new threats of radical Islam, in a perspective that considers the compatibility between Islam and democracy.
