On Tuesday, 27 November, at 18:30h, Johanna Mendelson, Associated Researcher with the Centre for Strategic and Internacional Studies (CSIS), will give a talk at the CIDOB Foundation on the subject of Haiti: the role the UN should adopt and the future of MINUSTAH.

With the arrival of the UN Mission in Haiti in 2004 (MINUSTAH), the role of the United Nations went from being a peace mission to a development mission for the poorest country in America. What are the implications of this transformation, and of the MINUSTAH mission, for a sovereign, independent country in which 9,000 soldiers and police have been deployed to ensure the security of the citizens?

Mendelson will be speaking on the evolution of these missions, the role of Latin American armed forces in this round of peacekeeping and the specific significance of the mission within the context of relations with the United States.
